St. George Island spent Saurday April 8, 2017 in peril of a wildfire that skipped around the east side of the island from airborne embers. East Pine St. was one of the busiest thoroughfares in Franklin County tonight. Just when a suggestion that the Apalachicola Fire Department head west to Tenth St. A flareup pops up right where they were, They were still attached to a hydrant, and were able to put a few gallons of water on the flareup. Fortunately, no houses were burned down. The St. George Island Fire Department's pumper truck puts out the last of an ember fed flareup just before having to run up to Tenth St. to refill their tanks. Units from Eastpoint, the Forestry Service, Apalachicola, the Sheriff's Department, and others were involved with the effort. Around ten o'clock firefighters dec;lared the fire under control as gatorade and sandwiches were passed out to some dog tired volunteers. The island, and the county THANK YOU!
